PLAYING WITH OTHERS CREATES A FOUNDATION FOR RAPID IMPROVEMENT

At the Pasadena Piano Institute, we believe a weekly team lesson is a necessary partner to the weekly individual lesson.

What is Team Piano?

Team Lessons are structured as a rehearsals for beginner pianists. There are five pianos and each students sits at their own piano. We play music specially arranged for five pianos. Imagine a piano orchestra.

Music is drawn from the classical piano repertoire, famous orchestral pieces and even traditional songs done in a jazz style. Teams rehearse two pieces each semester and we do group sight-reading as time allows. Come for a free observation. It's an experience you'll never forget

Institute students love Team Piano. There's camaraderie, it's fun and they are learning difficult skills, easily. These are skills you can't learn playing alone. Skills like leading other musicians, blending volume and finding your place when you are lost. Five pianos create a complex sound environment that challenges a student's listening skill.

Prerequisites

Some ability to read music is required although there is no sight-reading requirement. If ensemble members have sight-reading skills there are opportunities for sight-reading during rehearsals.Pianists must commit to at least one semester because they become members of a team. The team depends on each student pianist’s attendance at rehearsals.

Books & Tuition

Students must purchase the music so they can take it home to practice. The ensemble scores are published in separate books. Each book is between $7 and $25.00. Generally, two books are needed for a semester.

There is a modest fee for each rehearsal. David Cutter’s students pay a weekly tuition which pays for both a private lesson and the ensemble rehearsal. For other students and teachers, please call for free trials and scheduling. After a free trial we can discuss fees.

Experience the magic

We have video and audio recordings of our students playing so you can hear what Team Piano sounds like.

Team Piano - Program Structure

Team Piano rehearsals are once a week. The team works together to learn ensemble skills while polishing two pieces each semester. The culminating end-of-semester performance is a rich experience that deepens and accelerates the learning of piano skills. Team Piano is fun and allows students to enjoy the piano as a social experience.

We believe the value is so great that we put beginners on teams as soon as they are ready. Even if they are not yet reading music. Usually it's about 2 to 4 months from the day a student has their first lesson till they are ready to join a team.

The sooner a student joins a team, the sooner these team skills will be learned and transferred to a student's solo practice. We do make sure that everyone on a team has similar skills. Matching students by skill level fosters compatibility so team members are neither frustrated or bored. This is best accomplished at the beginning of a semester but open seats can become available at any time.

THE VALUE OF TEAM WORK

In the music business a team of musicians is called an ensemble. What’s the difference between five people playing pianos in the same room and Team Piano? Cohesive listening. As a team, each pianist learns to play accurate rhythm and blend their volume and tone. Each team member plays exactly with the others using their listening skills.

The value of playing in a larger ensemble rather than the more common duet is in having a more complex sound to work with. It’s more challenging to blend when there are more parts to listen to. The greater challenge makes the learning go faster and reach much deeper.

Start a Piano Club

We have been so impressed with the rate of student progress that we make our Team Piano program open to other teachers and students. If you have friends or know other pianists, consider starting a team of your own. This kind of playing experience is very valuable and most pianists have not experienced it.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF ENSEMBLES

Ensembles all have in common the challenge of playing together and sounding like one cohesive group. Orchestras are the largest ensemble but there are many different sized ensembles between the full orchestra and a piano duet.

David teaches duets and duos but also features music arranged specifically for five pianos! This means each pianist has a unique part where they have to “carry their weight” over an entire piano. These five separate parts add up to a rich, orchestrated sound. Five piano ensembles are truly delightful and educational in nature.
